Smith not ready for starting RB job

MANKATO, Minn. -- Observations on the 2003 Minnesota Vikings from training camp practices:

1. Rookie Onterrio Smith isn't ready yet to take over Michael Bennett's starting job but don't count him out for getting a chance by the end of September. Because Oregon doesn't complete their classes until mid June, Smith missed 14 key practices in the offseason program and has to cram to learn pass protection sets in the backfield. Smith is about a 4.48 runner who may not have the breakaway speed, but he's a tough runner who's not afraid to hit it inside. Doug Chapman should start, but the sleeper may be Larry Ned.

2. Defensive tackle Chris Hovan may have the game's best "get off" from the line among defensive linemen. He had a breakthrough season last year and vows to have an All-Pro season. He lifts six days a week and is relentless. There is enough talent along the Vikings defensive line that all blocking schemes can't completely load up on him.

3. Chris Claiborne should be among the tackle leaders and will add more big plays to the Vikings defense. He trimmed his weight by 20 pounds, and he moves well for a 259-pound outside linebacker. He and Henri Crockett looked particular good in pass drops against the Chiefs in their scrimmages.

4. The secret weapon along the Vikings defensive line will be rookie Kevin Williams. He's such a good 300-pound athlete that he can be used at nose tackle and defensive end. Country strong, Williams has the power to win battles against guards and center and has the quickness to beat tackles on pass-rush plays.
