BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON (AP) -- After the Boston Bruins shocked the Washington
Capitals with a short-handed goal, Ulf Dahlen displayed quicker
response time than a veteran 9-1-1 unit.
Dahlen had two goals, including the tiebreaking score with 14:11
left, as the Capitals stretched their home winning streak to five
with a 3-2 victory Friday night.
| | | Bruins goalie Peter Skudra, right, made 27 saves in the losing effort Friday. |
Dahlen's first goal put the Capitals up 2-1 in the second
period. Then, 30 seconds after Boston pulled even on a short-handed
goal by Andrei Kovalenko, Dahlen deflected a blast by Calle
Johansson past Peter Skudra.
"It was big," said Dahlen, playing in his 100th game with
Washington. "We bounced right back with a goal and were able to
keep the score like that."
The Bruins, despite getting only two shots in the second period,
put themselves in position to at least get a tie when Kovalenko
scored on a breakaway after taking the puck from Peter Bondra. But
Dahlen saved the day.
"To come back and score on the same power play, that's why we
won the game," Bondra said. "Ulf made me feel much better. He
saved me."
Boston coach Mike Keenan was disgusted with the effort of the
Bruins, who were outshot 30-23 and rendered helpless in the second
period.
"We had half the team competing tonight," he said. "We didn't
have the passion from a good half the team. It's a complete
disappointment."
The key, though, was Dahlen's counterpoint to Kovalenko's point.
"That's when you have to have the composure and the instincts
to make sure you kill off the penalty," said Keenan, 5-8-2-2 since
taking the job on Oct. 25.
Bondra scored his team-high ninth goal for the Capitals, who
have a seven-game unbeaten streak at MCI Center. Olaf Kolzig
stopped 21 shots to help Washington to its fourth win in five
games.
Dahlen recorded his third two-goal game of the season as the
Capitals recorded a second straight win for only the second time
this season. Washington has yet to win three in a row.
The Capitals snapped a 1-1 tie at 3:05 of the second period when
Dahlen put in the rebound of his own shot after Skudra foiled his
wraparound attempt. Johansson got an assist on the play, his 332nd
with Washington, breaking Scott Stevens' franchise record for
defensemen.
Each team scored a power-play goal in the first period, which
ended with a fight between Boston captain Jason Allison and
Washington's Steve Konowalchuk.
Bondra gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 1:40 of the first period
on a slap shot from the right circle with Paul Coffey off for high
sticking.
Coffey made amends by setting up Darren Van Impe, who connected
on a rising shot from the top of the left circle at 9:37.
Van Impe strained his knee later in the game, Keenan said.
Game notes
