Battle for Northeast Division remains close

RECAP | BOX SCORE

TORONTO (AP) -- A fortunate bounce of the puck kept the Buffalo Sabres in striking distance of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Northeast Division.

Buffalo's Erik Rasmussen takes to the air while trying to hook the puck around the Toronto's net. Moving in from left is Maple Leafs' Danny Markov and Dave Manson, right.

Jonas Hoglund scored with 2:44 remaining in the third period as the Leafs and the Sabres played to a 1-1 tie Wednesday night.

"Hoglund got a lucky bounce," Buffalo goalie Dominik Hasek said. "I think they were a little bit lucky to tie the game."

Buffalo's Maxim Afinogenov scored on a breakaway with 6:10 remaining in the third period, but Hoglund countered minutes later -- converting a rebound past Hasek.

"I was just so happy," Hoglund said. "It was a big goal. It was big for this team. It was a big point. I was surprised the puck ended up on my stick. It was a broken play, and it was an open net so it just went in."

The Sabres, who play host to the Leafs on Friday night, are three points behind first-place Toronto.

Maple Leafs goalie Curtis Joseph made 24 saves.

Hasek, a five-time Vezina Trophy winner, made 21 saves in an attempt for his 50th career shutout. Hasek said he knew of the game's importance.

"Toronto is only 100 miles or so from Buffalo, so it's a big rivalry," Hasek said. "They talk about here and they talk about in Buffalo. We're also fighting for first place in our division."

Former Leafs player Doug Gilmour assisted on Afinogenov's eighth goal of the season. Afinogenov skated untouched from center ice, and put it between Joseph's pads.

Buffalo's Jason Woolley thought he scored with just less than three minutes left in the second, but the goal was disallowed because teammate Chris Gratton was in the crease as the puck went in.

Game notes
The Leafs are 1-5-1 against the Sabres since coach Pat Quinn was hired three years ago. ... Buffalo's Jason McKee sent Mats Sundin flying with a check in the third period. Shayne Corson then tussled with McKee and both got hit with roughing penalties. ... The Leafs have just four victories in 11 games. ... Hoglund has 14 goals.
