BOSTON (AP) -- The Dallas Stars are again dealing with adversity,
and for the second time in 10 months goalie Ed Belfour is right in
the middle of it.
Belfour's presence wasn't missed as backup Marty Turco earned
his first career shutout leading the Stars to a 4-0 victory over
the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
| | | Goalie Byron Dafoe and the Bruins did not take advantage of the Stars' controversy. |
Belfour left the team after he and coach Ken Hitchcock had a
"disagreement over Belfour's participation in Saturday's pregame
optional practice."
"Ed called me today, but I'm not going to make any comments
until it is worked out," Stars captain Derian Hatcher said. "I
don't think anyone saw this coming."
Stars general manager Bob Gainey asked Hitchcock to not issue
any statements.
Belfour was embroiled in controversy last March when he was
arrested for disorderly conduct.
"When things like that happen, teams get more prepared,"
Bruins forward Bill Guerin said. "Instead of a distraction, it
could have been a spark."
Turco appeared in his 10th NHL game, and has stopped 93 of his
last 95 shots during his last four appearances.
"My first shutout is pretty big and it will be a lasting memory
for me," Turco said. "Ever since the holidays I have felt good
about myself, and being a No. 1 goaltender is something I have been
working toward my whole career."
The Stars are 40-1 in their last 41 road games when scoring
three or more goals.
Brett Hull gave Dallas an early 1-0 lead, when he backhanded a
shot past a fallen Byron Dafoe at 1:26 of the first. Hull has 18
goals and 15 assists in 25 games against the Bruins, who are 0-4-2
in their last six against the Stars, including three straight home
losses.
The Stars increased their lead to 2-0 just over a minute later,
when Grant Marshall scored through Dafoe's legs.
"It is so hard to play from behind in this league," Hull said.
"To get two quick goals and get out to the early lead was big for
us."
Boston continued to struggle scoring goals, with only six in
their last five games. The Bruins, who lost for just the third time
in 10 games, haven't scored a power-play goal in 33 consecutive
attempts.
"The power-play thing is not nearly as frustrating as having a
team show up one night and not the other," Bruins coach Mike
Keenan said. "It is like parenting, when you have a problem child.
... It's my job to stay positive."
Brenden Morrow scored his ninth goal at 1:29 of the second, when
he converted a pass from Hull to give Dallas a 3-0 lead.
Recently signed free agent Benoit Hogue had two assists in his
first game for Dallas.
Former Bruin Ted Donato capped the scoring for Dallas with his
second goal of the season.
