Oilers still strong at home

RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- Second chances are rare in the NHL. So Shawn Horcoff made sure to take advantage of his Wednesday night.

Horcoff put in the winning goal midway through the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks, scoring on a play similar to a rush the rookie winger failed to capitalize on.

"I was in a similar situation earlier in the game, but I shot low and he saved it," said Horcoff, who beat rookie goalie Michel Larocque 8:54 into the third to put Edmonton up 3-2. "So I shot high. When I looked up, it was in the net."

Horcoff took a cross-ice feed from Anson Carter, raced down the left wing and slapped a shot over Larocque's right shoulder for his fifth goal in 22 games.

"He made an outstanding pass -- tape to tape," said Horcoff. "It helped me stay in stride and keep my step on the defenseman."

Ethan Moreau and Mike Comrie also scored for the Oilers, who are undefeated in their last five home games (3-0-2-0) and 5-2-2-0 in their last nine.

Dean McAmmond and Blair Atcheynum found the net for the Hawks, 1-4 after going six games without a loss.

Tommy Salo, playing in his league-leading 48th game, made 23 saves, including several key stops with Chicago pressing in the first period.

But Oilers winger Rem Murray made the biggest save of the night, blocking Steve Sullivan's drive during a scramble in front of Salo in the dying seconds of the third.

"Tommy was on the ground and I just tried to get behind him and get in the way of the puck," said Murray. "I don't think Sullivan got much on the shot. I think he'd like to have that one back."

Sullivan, who leads the Blackhawks with 47 points, said, "I just tried to get it on the net. When I looked the first time, it was empty. Then I saw a stick come across to stop it."

After playing 26 minutes of scoreless, back-and-forth hockey, the teams scored three goals in less than three minutes in the second period.

Moreau put the Oilers in front with a shorthanded goal at 6:09. With Murray serving a double-minor for high-sticking, Igor Ulanov picked off a pass in the Edmonton zone and hit Moreau with a lead pass. Moreau beat Larocque with a wrist shot from the circle, his seventh goal and first shorthanded this season.

McAmmond pulled Chicago even 63 seconds later, scoring a power-play goal during Murray's second penalty.

Comrie made it 2-1, but Atcheynum beat Salo 4:58 into third to make it 2-2.

Game notes
Jocelyn Thibault was slated to start in net for Chicago, but was relegated to back-up duties with a slight neck strain. ... The Oilers assigned defenseman Scott Ferguson to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs after the game for a brief conditioning stint. He was called up by Edmonton on Jan. 19 and played in one game. Ferguson will play twice for Hamilton, on Feb. 2 and Feb. 4, then will rejoin the Oilers after the NHL All-Star break.
