Kozlov scores big goal as Red Wings rally again

RECAP | BOX SCORE

DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Red Wings rescued a point just in the nick of time.

Vyacheslav Koslov
Detroit's Vyacheslav Kozlov celebrates with teammate Darren McCarty (25) after scoring the tying goal with 1.5 seconds left in the third period.

Slava Kozlov's goal with 1.5 seconds left gave the Red Wings a 2-2 tie with the Canucks and ended any hopes of Vancouver ending its futility streak against Detroit.

The Canucks are 0-13-3 against the Red Wings in the last 16 games between the teams.

Kozlov's tip from the slot eluded Vancouver goalie Bob Essensa.

"They sent the puck across, Kozzy got the tip on it. It hit my pad, came up over top of me and caught the mesh just inside the post," Essensa said. "Where it went from there, I'm not sure."

The goal light never went on, but after the play was reviewed, it was ruled a goal.

"I knew it was in from the get-go," Essensa said. "It went over my head and went in."

It was Kozlov's 16th goal of the season.

"I was right on the line. I saw right away it was in," Kozlov said.

Todd Bertuzzi broke a 1-1 tie for the Canucks with a power-play goal with 1:38 left in the second period. His 24th goal was scored when he poked in Markus Naslund's rebound from the crease.

"When you lose the lead in the last second, it's very disheartening," Vancouver coach Marc Crawford said. "We have to try to look at the positives here. We battled these guys real hard and played a very intelligent game."

The Red Wings, who outshot the Canucks 14-5 in the second period and held them without a shot for almost the first 15 minutes of the period, tied it 1-1 at 5:19 of the second on Sergei Fedorov's 32nd goal of the season.

His one-timed slap shot from the top outside edge of the left circle beat Essensa between the pads.

The Red Wings are accustomed to close games. They lead the NHL in one-goal decisions, one-goal victories and overtime victories. They've made late game-winning and game-tying goals routine.

"We're doing this a lot," Steve Duchesne said. "But maybe the next time, we can score with more than one second left."

The Canucks got the only goal of the first period when Naslund scored on the power play at 4:11.

With Verbeek off for slashing, Naslund took a pass from Ed Jovanovski in the right circle on the rush, cut across the crease and beat Red Wings goalie Manny Legace with a high shot.

The Canucks had an apparent goal waved off 4:14 later when it was ruled that Peter Schaefer knocked the net off its moorings as Andrew Cassels shot went in.

Game notes
Vancouver's Jason Strudwick missed the game because of an injured knee. ... Mike Stapleton was a healthy scratch for the Canucks. ... With rosters expanding after the trade deadline, the Red Wings recalled defenseman Jiri Fischer from Cincinnati of the AHL.
