Colorado is making its first appearance in the Stanley Cup
Finals since winning it all in 1996. The Devils are in the
finals for the second year in a row and for the third time in
the last seven seasons. New Jersey finished seven points behind the Avalanche in the
race for the 2001 Presidents' Trophy. This year's matchup marks
the 1st time since 1989, when the Calgary Flames met the
Montreal Canadiens, that the top two records in the league are
meeting for the Stanley Cup. This is the first time in modern NHL history that a team has
returned to its previous home to play for Lord Stanley's
challis. Prior to relocating to the Garden State on May 27,
1982, the Devils, then known as the Colorado Rockies, played in
the Mile High City from the 1977-78 through the 1981-82 seasons.
The Devils gave themselves a chance to defend their championship
with a 4-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Five of the
Eastern Conference Finals. They swept the Detroit Red Wings in
1995 to win their first Stanley Cup, and defeated the Dallas
Stars, 4-2, in the 2000 final. New Jersey is 13-12 in series-opening games, going 6-7 on the
road, and is opening a series on the road for the 14th time. The Devils have scored a playoff league-high 58 goals, while
allowing 33. Their plus-25 goal differential leads the NHL this
playoff season. The club's 1.81 GAA is second in this season's
tournament. Goaltender Martin Brodeur holds an 8-2 record in 10 games in the
Stanley Cup Finals. In 674 minutes, Brodeur has allowed 16
goals and posted a 1.42 goals-against average, the lowest among
all NHL goalies that have played a minimum of 10 games. Brodeur holds the second lowest career GAA in the modern era of
the Stanley Cup playoffs at 1.85. Brodeur and Colorado netminder Patrick Roy have started against
each other 14 times during the regular season prior to this
year's finals matchup. Brodeur holds the edge, going 9-5-0 with
a 2.15 GAA and one shutout. Roy is 5-9-0 in the 14 meetings
with a 2.82 GAA and two shutouts. New Jersey left wing Patrik Elias is currently on a team-record
10-game point-scoring streak, collecting five goals and 13
points. Right wing Petr Sykora has points in his last nine
games, tallying six goals and 14 assists. Colorado ousted the St. Louis Blues in the West final, also in
five games. It is 63-35 during the postseason all-time,
including a 35-16 mark on home ice. The franchise holds a 20-12
record in Game One of a playoff series, 14-3 when opening at
home. The Avalanche have won 15 of their last 18 home playoff games
dating back to last season, outscoring the opposition 52-28. Colorado has depended on the power play during this postseason,
going 9-for-28 with the man advantage and has scored power-play
goals in five of its last six games. After allowing nine goals through the first four postseason
games against the Vancouver Canucks, Roy held the opposition to
one or less goals in six of his last seven games. Right wing Milan Hejduk is pacing Colorado in scoring during the
playoffs, collecting seven goals and 13 assists. Captain Joe
Sakic is second with nine goals and 17 points. Game Two of the best-of-seven series is Tuesday in Colorado.
