ESPN's analysts share their thoughts on the 2002 NHL All-Star game:
Bill Clement
I've got a feeling that Alex Zhitnik was the most shocked guy in show business when he got hit by Jeremy Roenick. It's not necessarily an unwritten rule, it's just never done in the All-Star Game. I was really floored by that. We had a shot of Zhitnik on the bench and he was smiling and all, but I'm sure it was like, "What the hell is he thinking." I was also surprised that Nikolai Khabibulin didn't win the MVP, but the voting takes place before the game actually ends and he made a lot of saves toward the end of the game. And Jose Theodore was fantastic too. I really thought the day belonged to the goaltenders.

It was great to see Eric Daze win the MVP. We've seen his career progress and he's having an outstanding season because he's picked it up several notches. This will be a huge benefit for him confidence wise. He's just one of the good, young stars we've seen this weekend. With 11 guys playing in their first All-Star Game, it shows you how much great young talent there is in the NHL. I'm really glad so many of these young stars were able to show their stuff this weekend.

And you even saw a hit or two. I think Jeremy Roenick and Chris Chelios talked -- and maybe even had a little side wager -- about who could maybe get one hit in early. It was kind of surprise to see Eric Daze win the MVP -- especially on the losing side. I was really leaning toward Nikolai Khabibulin, who shut down the North Americans in the third period and playing as well as he played. It's really hard because Teemu Selanne had a couple of goals and Markus Nasland had a couple, so it was probably hard to determine. But it is great for a young player like Daze, who is having a great year. Not too many people get to see who he is and for him to win it is a real nice thing. |
