DALLAS -- Dallas Stars goalie Ed Belfour pleaded guilty
Tuesday to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest following a
March scuffle with a security guard at an upscale hotel.
Belfour, 35, also apologized for his actions.
Dallas County Criminal Court Judge Phil Barker sentenced Belfour
to two years' probation and a $3,000 fine. He also ordered Belfour
to visit two area high schools within the next two years to warn
students about alcohol abuse.
"I'm real sorry for the incident that took place," Belfour
told the four Dallas police officers who were involved in his
arrest, all present for the sentencing. "I won't let it happen
again."
Jim Burnham, Belfour's attorney, said the goalie had asked for
the officers to be present so he could apologize to them.
Witnesses said Belfour appeared intoxicated when he arrived
March 8 at The Mansion at Turtle Creek with an unidentified woman.
She later told security that she was afraid of Belfour and wanted
to leave, police said. Hotel officials escorted her to a cab, and
she left.
Belfour also tried to leave his hotel room. When a guard tried
to subdue him, Belfour slammed the man against a wall and put him
in a headlock, releasing him only after police sprayed him with
pepper spray, authorities said.
Belfour, considered one of the NHL's top goalies, has led Dallas
to the conference finals for the past three years, winning the 1999
Stanley Cup.
