BOSTON -- Forward Jason Allison is the Boston Bruins' new
captain, filling a spot that had been vacant since Ray Bourque was
traded last spring.
Allison, picked by coach Mike Keenan on Wednesday, becomes the
16th captain in the 77-year history of the team. Others included
Hall-of-Famers Leo Boivin, John Bucyk, Dit Clapper, Fern Flaman,
Milt Schmidt and Cooney Weiland.
"Jason has earned this honor," Keenan said. "He's exhibited
to me the leadership I look for in a captain. He has the complete
respect of his teammates, his coaching staff and team management."
Now in his seventh professional season, his fourth full season
with the Bruins, Allison leads the NHL in scoring with nine goals
and 14 assists, heading into Wednesday's action. He came to Boston in 1997 with Anson Carter and Jim
Carey when Adam Oates, Rick Tocchet and Bill Ranford were shipped
to Washington after they had fallen out with Bruins management.
Allison has twice led the Bruins in scoring, including
career-high totals of 33 goals and 83 points in 1997-98.
