Bruins seeking size on defense

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins acquired defenseman Patrick
Traverse and left wing Andrei Nazarov from the Anaheim Mighty Ducks
for Samuel Pahlsson on Saturday night.
New Bruins general manager Mike O'Connell has been busy since
taking over for Harry Sinden, who stepped down Nov. 1st. On
Wednesday, Boston acquired top scorer Bill Guerin from the Edmonton
Oilers for holdout forward Anson Carter.
"I thought we needed size to compete," O'Connell said. "With
Kyle McLaren's injury status unknown and Peter Popovic breaking his
foot, we have to see if we can shore up the defense."
Pahlsson was acquired last season, along with Brian Rolston,
from Colorado in the trade that sent longtime Bruins captain Ray
Bourque to the Avalanche. Pahlsson, a center, has one goal and one
assist in 17 games this season.
Traverse, a 1992 third-round draft choice of the Ottawa
Senators, has one goal in 15 games this season -- his third full NHL
campaign.
Nazarov scored a career-high 12 goals and totaled 222 penalty
minutes in 60 games for the San Jose Sharks during the 1996-97
season. The Bruins will be his fifth team since being drafted in
1992.
"Nazarov played pretty well last year and is aggressive,"
O'Connell said. "We have always liked him and both players have
said they are excited about coming here."
