VANCOUVER, British Columbia Dallas forward Joe Nieuwendyk
left Wednesday's game with a strained groin, and did not return.
Nieuwendyk left the Stars' game against the Vancouver Canucks
5:17 into the second period, favoring his right leg after he
stepped awkwardly on teammate Grant Marshall's stick.
"I don't know the severity of it yet, and I probably won't for
a few days," said Nieuwendyk, adding that he doesn't expect to
play Friday at Anaheim or Sunday at home game against Buffalo.
"I'm hoping that it's not too bad and I won't be out too long."
Nieuwendyk, third among Dallas scorers with 45 points, was
helped off the ice and limped noticeably as he made his way to the
dressing room with team trainers. He will be re-evaluated Thursday
morning.
"It's an injury I've never really had before so we'll see how
it is in a couple of days and go from there," he said after
Vancouver's 5-4 victory.
The 34-year-old center has missed only two games this season,
but has a long history of injury problems. Nieuwendyk missed 10
games with a bruised chest, and 21 with a sprained right shoulder
last season. He had surgery on both knees shortly before the
1998-99 season.
