Shanahan returns early due to game's magnitude

DETROIT -- Brendan Shanahan, the Detroit winger who missed the
previous three games with a broken foot, played in the Red Wings'
3-2 playoff loss to Los Angeles on Saturday.

The Red Wings had been without Shanahan and captain Steve
Yzerman, who account for nearly 20 percent of their offense.
Shanahan, who had two goals and an assist in Detroit's Game 1
victory, had 31 goals this season, his fifth with Detroit. He broke
the foot blocking a shot in Game 1.
He had one assist and logged 21:41 of ice time, more than any
other Detroit forward. He said he decided to play because of the
magnitude of the game.
"It was a big game," Shanahan said. "Tonight was a game-time
decision. I don't know about Game 6. ... I felt better on skates. I
was surprised as anybody yesterday that I felt good."
Kings coach Andy Murray said he thought everyone was surprised
that Shanahan played.
Kings left wing Luc Robitaille had words of praise for Shanahan.
"He's that kind of player. He's a warrior," said Robitaille,
who had an assist in the game.
Detroit jumped to a 2-0 series lead with convincing wins at
home, but the Kings evened the series with two victories at Staples
Center, including a 4-3 overtime triumph Wednesday night.
