WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Ticker) -- Mario Lemieux was in a no-lose situation. Lemieux scored a power-play goal in the first period for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who squandered a lead late in the third and lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Jan Hrdina's goal 3:49 into overtime. Pittsburgh's owner and star player, Lemieux suited up for his top minor league affiliate and opened the scoring 6:52 into the game. But he also was on the ice when Hrdina got to a rebound of Milan Kraft's shot and beat goaltender Sebastien Caron from the slot for the game-winner. Robert Lang and Aleksey Morozov answered Lemieux's early tally with their first preseason goals, giving Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. But Ross Lupaschuk, one of three prospects acquired from the Washington Capitals for superstar Jaromir Jagr, tied it 21 seconds after Morozov scored. Following a scoreless second period, defenseman Peter Ratchuk put Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in front with 5:56 left in regulation. But Morozov struck again just over three minutes later to force overtime. Kraft, who spent part of last season with the minor league Penguins, collected three assists while Hrdina had a goal and two assists. Playoff hero Johan Hedberg stopped 16 of 18 shots for Pittsburgh before being replaced by Jean-Sebastien Aubin midway through the second period. |
