NEW YORK -- The New York Rangers acquired right wing Matthew Barnaby from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday for left wing Zdeno Ciger.
Barnaby, 28, had 70 penalty minutes and failed to record a point in 29 games this season for the Lightning. In 76 games last season for the Lightning and Pittsburgh, he had five goals, eight assists and a league-leading 265 penalty minutes.
"We can use his grit," Rangers coach Ron Low said before New York's game against Nashville. "I hope he can add a bit of finesse, too, because at one point the kid had considerable skills."
Low said Barnaby could join the Rangers' struggling second line of Petr Nedved and Radek Dvorak.
"He can be a physical presence on that line and keep guys from running them," Low said.
Ciger, 32, had six goals and seven assists in 29 games for the Rangers this season. He played for New Jersey and Edmonton from 1990-96, then spent five seasons in his native Slovakia before returning to the NHL this season.
"Zdeno is a smart player and very creative offensively," Lightning general manager Rick Dudley said. "We have been looking for someone to help our offense and Zdeno has been great in both the NHL and Europe." |
