Herb Brooks has taken another step toward a return to the NHL as coach.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, Brooks interviewed with Glen Sather on Monday morning at the general manager's home on Palm Springs for the Rangers' head coaching position.

Brooks talked with Sather by phone late last week and the two hockey icons heard enough from one another to take it a step further, and according to the report, Brooks said all he knew was that he was one of several men on Sather's list of potential candidates.

"After Donnie (Maloney, assistant GM) called and got my schedule, Slats called me a couple of days ago," Brooks told the Daily News. "But I don't know how to read this whole thing. I might not be the right fit from the point of view of salary request or philosophy or whatever. Who knows?"

Sather met with former Stars coach Ken Hitchcock on April 19, and several sources also reported that former Sabres coach Ted Nolan was on Sather's list of candidates. Panthers coach Mike Keenan, who coached the Rangers to a Stanley Cup in 1994, was also contacted by New York, but he turned them down and will stay with Florida.

The Rangers fired Ron Low on April 15 after the team failed to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season.
