As list shrinks, Sather looks into coaching return

ESPN.com news services

Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather might take matters into his own hands next season.

According to a report in the New York Post, Sather is considering himself to coach the Blueshirts. Citing two unnamed sources, the newspaper also reported that if Sather does return to the bench, he could ask team captain Mark Messier to be an assistant.

Sather hasn't coached since replacing Ted Green for the final 60 games of Edmonton's 1993-94 season, and his last full season as a head coach came in 1988-89.

The report is a turn from last month, when Sather said he would not make a return behind the bench even when asked to do so by Pavel Bure. But the Rangers' list of candidates has dwindled since then:

  • Former Stars coach Ken Hitchcock was hired by the Flyers.

  • Herb Brooks, the former Pittsburgh Penguins and two-time U.S. Olympic coach, withdrew from consideration.

  • Former Rangers and current Panthers coach Mike Keenan said he would remain in Florida.

  • Former New Jersey Devils (and Los Angeles Kings) coach Larry Robinson told the Rangers he's not interested in the job and would honor the first year of his three-year consulting deal with the Devils.

The only name left in the rumor mill is Ted Nolan, the former Sabres coach who was also reportedly on Sather's list.

The Rangers fired Ron Low on April 15 after the team failed to make the playoffs for the fifth straight season.
