TAMPA, Florida -- The Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday finalized the signing of center Alexander Svitov, their first-round pick in the 2001 draft who has been released from further military commitment. The standard three-year rookie contract was originally signed by Svitov last July and may now be registered by the NHL, according to Lightning general manager Jay Feaster. Svitov appeared in only three games with Avangard Omsk of the Russian Elite League in 2001-02 due to a conflict with Omsk regarding mandatory military commitments. Svitov's agent, Jay Grossman, recently secured the Russian's release from further military service. "It is impossible to imagine what this young man has gone through during the past year, through no fault of his own," Feaster said. "They say 'that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger,' and we are convinced Alex has become even stronger and more resolute as a result of this ordeal. "We are thrilled to have him here in Tampa, and look forward to his first NHL training camp in September." The 19-year-old Svitov was selected third overall by the Lightning in last year's draft. He was ranked second overall among European skaters prior to the draft after recording eight goals and six assists in 39 games with Avangard Omsk during the 2000-01 season. The 6-foot-3, 198-pound Svitov made his debut in Russia's top league as a 16-year-old in 1998-99 and was a regular for two seasons. He also played for Avangard VDV of Russia's Junior League in 1998-99 and 1999-00, recording 28 goals and 45 points in 41 games. In international competition, Svitov skated for Russia in the 2001 and 2002 World Junior Championships. |
