Devils sign Schwab to multiyear deal

Associated Press

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils signed backup goaltender Corey Schwab to a multiyear contract Monday.

Terms were not announced.

The 31-year-old Schwab had a 12-10-5 record with one shutout and a 2.73 goals-against average in 30 games last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Schwab also played three seasons for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 6-foot, 180-pound Canadian began his NHL career with the Devils during the 1995-96 season, when he had 2.18 GAA in 10 games.

New Jersey signed Schwab in the 10th round of the 1990 entry draft. He was with the organization five years.

In May, Devils backup goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck left the NHL to become the head coach and director of hockey operations for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League.
