Suter's retirement leaves hole in Sharks' blue line

Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Gary Suter, a four-time NHL All-Star defenseman, retired Tuesday.

Suter, a two-time U.S. Olympic player, spent the past four seasons with the San Jose Sharks in a 17-year career that included stops in Calgary and Chicago. He won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 1985-86 with the Flames.

Last season, Suter led Sharks defensemen in scoring for the second straight time, recording six goals and 27 assists while playing in all 82 games. He also played for the United States' silver medal-winning team in the Salt Lake City Olympics in February.

"It's disappointing to see him go, but he's going out on top," Sharks coach Darryl Sutter said.

Suter finished his NHL career with 203 goals and 641 assists. He is one of just four American-born players and 15 defensemen to score 200 goals.

The former Wisconsin star was the quarterback of San Jose's power play while playing more than 20 minutes per game. His retirement, while widely expected all summer, leaves a hole on the Sharks' blue line.

Mike Rathje, Brad Stuart and Jeff Jillson all will see increased roles on San Jose's defense. Stuart is a restricted free agent and won't be at the opening of training camp on Thursday unless he's signed.
