Thrashers' offer isn't a done deal

ESPN.com news services

Unrestricted free-agent goalie Byron Dafoe received a contract offer from the Atlanta Thrashers and a deal could be completed as soon as Tuesday unless interest from other teams becomes a factor.

According to several published reports, both the New York Rangers and Islanders are interested.

The 31-year-old veteran Dafoe registered a 35-26-3 record with a 2.21 goals-against average and .907 save percentage with the Bruins last season.

With Mike Richter sidelined indefinitely with his second concussion of the year, the Rangers' goaltending workload sits on the shoulders of 19-year-old Dan Blackburn, who is 3-4-1 with a 3.05 goals-against average. Richter, whose most recent injury occurred in a Nov. 5 collision with Oilers forward Todd Marchant, missed the last nine games of last season with a concussion and fractured skull after taking a shot to the side of his helmet.

Interest from the Islanders isn't believed to be as earnest. With their No. 1 goalie, Chris Osgood, earning $4 million and backup Garth Snow earning $1.2 million, the Islanders would have almost $10 million tied up in goaltending if they signed Dafoe. Osgood's salary, coupled with his statistics -- a 6-7-0 record with a dismal 3.78 GAA and .858 save percentage -- make him difficult to trade.

The Thrashers No. 1 goaltender, Milan Hnilicka, owner of a 0-9-0 record, 4.16 GAA and .882 save percentage, was supplanted by backup Pasi Nurminen two weeks ago. Though Nurminen has fared better -- a 4-3-1 record, 3.45 GAA and .878 save percentage -- the Thrashers still have the second fewest points in the NHL.
