Desjardins seventh Flyer to reach plateau

Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Philadelphia defenseman Eric Desjardins played his 1,000 NHL game Wednesday night when the Flyers met the Atlanta Thrashers.

Desjardins, 32, is the 185th player to reach the mark and the seventh to get there as a member of the Flyers. He has 126 goals and 391 assists in 15 seasons with Philadelphia and Montreal.

This season, Desjardins -- the former Philadelphia captain -- has three goals and seven assists.

In 595 regular-season games with the Flyers, Desjardins -- a three-time All-Star -- has 83 goals and 255 assists. His 338 points are second to Mark Howe's 480 on the club's career list for defensemen.

Desjardins joins Bobby Clarke, Darryl Sittler, Craig MacTavish, Luke Richardson, and current teammates Mark Recchi and Jeremy Roenick to play their 1,000th game with the Flyers.

Roenick did it earlier this season after spending the bulk of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes.

He was in Atlanta to congratulate Desjardins, but not in uniform Wednesday night as he served the first of a two-game suspension for checking Dallas' Mike Modano from behind into the boards on Tuesday night.

Desjardins was drafted 38th overall by Montreal in 1987 and made his NHL debut the next season.

He played seven seasons with the Canadiens before being traded on Feb. 9, 1995, to Philadelphia, along with Gilbert Dionne and John LeClair, for Recchi and a third-round pick in the 1995 draft.
