SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Claude Lemieux already has four Stanley Cup championship rings.
He may have a chance to win another one this season, but it won't be as a member of the Phoenix Coyotes.
In a cost-cutting move Thursday, the Coyotes dealt the veteran right winger to the Dallas Stars for left wing Scott Pellerin and a conditional pick in the 2004 draft -- expected to be no lower than a third-round choice.
Lemieux, 37, had just six goals and eight assists in 36 games this season but missed nine games with a fractured foot.
He agreed to waive his no-trade clause so the deal could work.
"It hasn't been much fun for me here on the ice,'' Lemieux told The Arizona Republic. "My family and I, we love Arizona. This is our home. But not winning, for me, is tough to accept. Not winning and not playing as much as you expect to play is the ultimate worst-case scenario.''
Lemieux signed with the Coyotes as a free agent in December 2000 after stops in Montreal, New Jersey and Colorado. He's just one of five players in NHL history to win four championships with three different teams.
"Claude adds experience, depth and versatility to our forward group,'' Dallas general manager Doug Armstrong said. "He is a proven winner who has a postseason resume that speaks for itself. We feel he will make an immediate impact for our organization.''
For the Coyotes, the move will save money as they build for the future and await next year's opening of their new arena under construction in Glendale.
Lemieux makes $4 million this season and was scheduled to make $2.5 million next season under a four-year, $11.5 million deal he had with Phoenix.
Pellerin's salary is $1 million.
"I know Claude and his family love it here in Phoenix, but this is an opportunity for him to go to Dallas and possibly win another Stanley Cup,'' Coyotes coach Bob Francis said.
"He's a class act,'' Phoenix general manager Mike Barnett said of Lemieux. "If Claude gets to the winner's circle before we do, we'll be glad for him.''
Dallas leads the Western Conference and the Pacific Division with 61 points. Phoenix is last in the division with 41 points.
Pellerin, 33, had one goal and three assists in 20 games this season.
Phoenix will be Pellerin's seventh stop in his 10-year NHL career. He previously played for New Jersey, St. Louis, Minnesota, Carolina and Boston before joining the Stars this season.
"He's got skills. He competes. He doesn't stand in the periphery,'' Barnett said of Pellerin. "I like his maturity, his professionalism.'' |
