Teams to share AHL club in Lowell

ESPN.com news services

Carolina Hurricanes: RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Hurricanes agreed to share their American Hockey League affiliate in Lowell, Mass., with the Calgary Flames.

Calgary will provide eight skaters and one goaltender for the Lowell Lock Monsters next season, while Carolina will send its top prospects to the club. The team had been relying on free agents to fill out the roster.

This past season, three AHL teams were shared by two NHL parent clubs. All three -- Hamilton, Springfield and Utah -- qualified for the playoffs.

Calgary will not operate its AHL franchise in Saint John, Canada, this season.
