The Philadelphia Flyers re-signed defenseman Eric Desjardins and forward Claude Lapointe to two-year contracts on Monday. According to TSN of Canada, Desjardins' contract is for $4 million per season with an option for a third year at $3 million. Lapointe's will pay him $1 million a year. Desjardins, 34, had eight goals and 32 points and was plus-30 in 79 games last season. He suffered a broken foot during the first round of the playoffs against Toronto and missed the entire second round against Ottawa, which eliminated Philadelphia in six games. Lapointe, acquired from the Islanders for a fifth-round pick on March 9, registered eight goals and 16 points last season. Desjardins, a former Flyers captain, would have become an unrestricted free agent Tuesday. He ranks second on the team's all-time list among defensemen with 360 points. He had eight goals and 24 assists in 79 games with a plus-30 rating to lead the team in that category for the ninth consecutive season. "We have always liked the way that both players have played for us," Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. "Desjardins has been here for nine years and has been our best defenseman. I think that this was critical to the strength of our defense. "Desjardins has been a tremendous help to a lot of our young players as well." The 6-1, 205-pound Desjardins won the Barry Ashbee Trophy as Philadelphia's best defenseman for a record seventh time. Desjardins was acquired with John LeClair and Gilbert Dionne from the Montreal Canadiens in February 1995 for Mark Recchi and a draft pick. He won a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1993 and has 131 goals and 408 assists in 1,050 career games. Lapointe, a scrappy forward, had eight goals, eight assists and 36 penalty minutes in 80 games last season. After being acquired from the New York Islanders on March 9, Lapointe had two goals and two assists in 14 games with Philadelphia. The 5-9, 188-pound Lapointe has 122 goals and 175 assists in 837 career games with Quebec-Colorado, Calgary, the Islanders and Flyers. "Lapointe came in and did a really good job for us and actually took Marty Murray's position as a fourth-line center and penalty killer," Clarke said. "He is a very good player in a lot of ways and in a lot of positions for our club." Also Monday, the Flyers traded the rights to defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich to the Washington Capitals for a 2004 seventh-round pick. Yushkevich, a former All-Star, had three goals and 11 assists in 83 games last season, playing with three NHL clubs. Information from SportsTicker and The Associated Press was used in this report. |
