Defenseman returns to Stanley Cup finalists

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes signed free agent Glen Wesley to a one-year contract Tuesday, bringing back a defenseman who helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup finals in 2002.

Wesley spent nine seasons with the Hurricanes organization before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2004 draft. He ranks third in franchise history in games played with 629.

Wesley had one goal and 10 assists in 70 games last season.

"Glen is respected by his teammates and is active in the Triangle community," Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We believe his return further solidifies our defense heading into this season."
