Modano trying to recover championship ring

ESPN.com news services

DALLAS -- Dallas Stars captain Mike Modano never expected to find his 1999 Stanley Cup Championship ring on eBay.

But that's where the ring was before Thursday.

Modano's business manager Bob Murray took the blame late Thursday for what he said was a misunderstanding on his part.

"I am happy to report that the ring is now in safekeeping and under Mike's control. The listing has been pulled from e-Bay," Murray said in a statement.

He said Modano asked him to take the ring to deBoulle Jewelers in Dallas to be duplicated.

The arrangement allowed the jeweler to display the ring in the store. Murray said that because of a misunderstanding on his part, deBoulle also was authorized to sell the ring.

Modano was not aware of the arrangement.

A person listed as being from Coral Springs, Fla., offered the ring on eBay, and bidding soared to at least $20,000 before it was pulled from the online site.

Jeff Bartley, the jewelry company's vice president, told The Associated Press on Thursday that the company wasn't wrong in selling the ring.

"First of all, we would want to make it clear we did in fact have authorization to sell the ring," Bartley said.
