Thornton apologizes, will perform community service

Associated Press

ST. THOMAS, Ontario -- Boston Bruins captain Joe Thornton had charges for fighting with police withdrawn Tuesday.

Prosecutor Kevin Gowdey announced at a brief court hearing in St. Thomas, where Thornton grew up, that the 24-year-old NHL star would perform community service and apologize.

Gowdey said Thornton will complete the community service before training camp begins next month. The charges were stayed, rather than dropped, meaning the case could be revived within a year.

Thornton was charged with two counts of assaulting police and one of obstructing justice in a May 17 fight at a bar in St. Thomas, 120 miles west of Toronto.

His brother John, also arrested, still faces charges of obstructing police and failing to leave the premises.

Joe Thornton did not attend Tuesday's hearing, but later issued a statement through his lawyer apologizing for what happened.

"Incidents happen in our lives which we later wish had not happened," the statement said.

"I apologize for any difficulties which my actions may have caused members of our police force."
