Stars Traverse way to more backline depth

Dallas Stars: The Stars signed defenseman Patrick Traverse to a one-year deal Thursday.

Traverse appeared in 80 games with Hamilton of the American
Hockey League last season, with five goals and 21 assists.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound defenseman has appeared in 278 career
NHL games with the Ottawa Senators (1995-2000), the Mighty Ducks of
Anaheim (2000), the Boston Bruins (2000-2001) and the Montreal
Canadiens (2001-2003).

Terms of the deal weren't released.

Nashville Predators: Center Vernon Fiddler re-signed with the Predators after playing most of last season
with the team's AHL club.

Fiddler, a restricted free agent, appeared in 17 games last
season with the Predators. He has four goals and two assists in 36
career games in the NHL spanning two seasons, both with Nashville.

Fiddler had nine goals and 15 assists during the regular season
for Milwaukee in the AHL. He added five goals and three assists in
the minor league's team's playoff run to winning the Calder Cup.

Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins retained Matt
Murley, re-signing the left wing to a new contract.

Terms were not disclosed.

A second-round pick in 1999, Murley made his NHL debut last
season, beginning the campaign with the Penguins. He recorded
one goal, one assist and 14 penalty minutes in 18 games.

Murley, 24, also appeared in 63 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton
of the American Hockey League, collecting 10 goals and 26
assists.
