Sakic scores 1,500th point

DENVER -- The Colorado Avalanche's Joe Sakic became the 11th player in NHL history to reach 1,500 points on an assist in the first period against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

The game was halted to mark Sakic's accomplishment. Sakic, 37, is the sixth player to score that many points for one franchise. He's in his 18th season with Colorado/Quebec. Sakic's 922 assists rank 15th on the NHL's all-time list.

Washington won 5-3.

Sakic's first point came on an assist against Hartford (now the Carolina Hurricanes) on Oct. 6, 1988.
