ESPN Fantasy Projection: Burns and Erik Karlsson are both right-handed, offense-first rearguards, so it comes as no surprise that San Jose's plan to play them together was a failure. The Sharks ended Burns' 11-year run with the club this summer, shipping him to Carolina in what was essentially a salary dump. Burns will be 38 this season, but he still appears to have plenty left after finishing with 10 goals and 54 points in 82 games a year ago. Tony DeAngelo left the Hurricanes this summer, opening the door for Burns to quarterback the power play, a role he is still plenty effective at. The aging veteran could absolutely end up as one of the best fantasy defenders in the NHL this season.
