ESPN Fantasy Projection: Playing behind a defensive-minded, Barry Trotz-coached Islanders team, Varlamov had the best season of his professional career in 2020-21. He posted personal-best marks in both GAA (2.04) and save percentage (.929), while his seven shutouts tied him with Colorado's Philipp Grubauer for most in the league. The Russian netminder should be primed for another big season, but fantasy managers need to keep the presence of fellow countryman Ilya Sorokin in mind. The Islanders are high on the 26-year-old, and while Varlamov should earn the majority of the starts, Trotz has always been a guy who likes to get both of his goaltenders plenty of work. Sorokin played well in his rookie season, so a 60/40 split favoring Varlamov seems like a reasonable forecast.
