wasn't penalized for the hit.
Nieuwendyk was injured late in the first period of Saturday's Game 2 on a knee-on-knee hit with Edmonton rookie Scott Ferguson. Nieuwendyk underwent an MRI on Saturday at Baylor Medical Center, where the injury was revealed.
Nieuwendyk was limping and suffering from pain Sunday.
Nieuwendyk was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner in 1999 when the Stars won the Stanley Cup. As a top second-line center, he takes offensive pressure off Mike Modano and is one of the NHL's best on faceoffs.
He finished third on the Stars this season in goals (29) and points (52).
