McEachern fined maximum amount
Associated Press

NEW YORK – Shawn McEachern of the Ottawa Senators was fined $1,000 by the NHL on Monday for hitting Aki Berg of the Toronto Maple Leafs with the butt end of his stick during Game 2 of their playoff series.

The $1,000 fine is the maximum allowed under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.

Director of hockey operations Colin Campbell met with McEachern on Monday.

"McEachern's high stick was unintentional but careless," Campbell said.

McEachern and Berg struggled for the puck in the corner in Toronto's zone during the third period Saturday. Berg left the game with a cut above his left eye. No penalty was assessed.

"We both went toward the corner," Berg said after practice Monday. "That's playoff hockey."

He took part in an optional practice with the Leafs on Sunday.

"It was an accidental hit but I guess you have to control your stick better," McEachern said. "I wasn't trying to hit Aki Berg in the face with my stick or anything like that."

McEachern was pleased to hear Berg held no grudge.

"I'm glad he said that," McEachern said. "Especially around the eyes, you never want to get a guy there with the stick."
