EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Both New Jersey Devils defenseman Scott Niedermayer and forward Sergei Brylin practiced Monday and are listed day-to-day for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday.

Scott Niedermayer
Scott Niedermayer said after Monday's practice he is optimistic about playing Tuesday.
"He's got the go," Devils coach Larry Robinson said of Niedermayer. "I just have to talk to him and see how he feels and make a decision."

Niedermayer, 27, has not played since he suffered a concussion after taking an elbow from Tie Domi of Toronto in Game 4 of the conference semifinals on May 3. Niedermayer missed the final three games of that series, which the Devils won in seven games.

He participated in the morning skate Saturday prior to Game 1 against Pittsburgh and felt "pretty good," working out much longer than teammates at the Continental Airlines Arena. But he was not in the lineup for the fourth straight playoff game, and the Devils went on to a 3-1 victory.

"Everything has gone the way I'd hoped the last few days. I haven't really felt any real side effects, and today's the same," said Niedermayer after Monday afternoon's practice. "Hopefully, if I continue to feel this way, there'll be a good chance I can play.

"I haven't been told I'm playing," he said. "I feel good, so I'm optimistic I'll be playing."

A possible return by Niedermayer didn't thrill the Penguins, who worked out for 40 minutes in Pittsburgh before flying to New Jersey late Monday afternoon.

"Yeah, that's great news," Jaromir Jagr said sarcastically. "Couldn't be any better news."

Brylin has missed the last five games since catching his skate in a rut during Game 3 of the Toronto series on May 1. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee May 4. Brylin, who skated with Scott Gomez and Alexander Mogilny in practice Monday, said he has been medically cleared to play.
