PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Darius Kasparaitis, who broke two bones in his left foot in Game 2 of Eastern Conference finals against New Jersey, missed Game 3 on Thursday night.

Teammate Robert Lang was also out of the lineup, scratched from the game with a muscle strain.

Kasparaitis took part in the morning skate, but reported pain in his left foot and was replaced in the lineup by Marc Bergevin, who had missed six games with a rib injury.

Kasparaitis, who is usually matched against an opponent's top line, scored the series-winning overtime goal in Game 7 against Buffalo on May 10.

Kasparaitis suffered two broken two bones in his left foot Tuesday, but said Wednesday that he wanted to play. On game day, Kasparaitis was less optimistic.

Kasparaitis sustained the injury in the first period Tuesday in Game 2. After missing the remainder of the period, Kasparaitis returned to play despite knowing the extent of the injury. He did not take painkillers or have the sensitive area frozen.

"They told me it was broken, but I could try it. And I tried it," he said. "I was taking my clothes off (in between periods) and said 'I gotta go play. I have to play.'"

Kasparaitis' teammates were prepared to hear that the gritty Lithuanian would not play in Game 3.

"There aren't too many guys tougher. We're going to miss him," forward Kevin Stevens said. "I don't think he'll play. Why play tomorrow (Thursday)? Give it a couple of days and see what happens."

General manager Craig Patrick said anything is possible with a player with Kasparaitis' pain threshold.

"It's amazing a guy can play with two broken bones in his foot without any freezing or something to numb the pain," Patrick said Wednesday.

"We're not ruling it out. But realisitically, he should be out for the rest of the playoffs. But when you put your skate on, it's like putting on a cast."

The Eastern Conference final is tied at a game apiece.
