DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche could add some defensive depth in time for the Stanley Cup finals.

Defenseman Jon Klemm practiced Wednesday for the first time since injuring his right knee last week and hopes to play Saturday in Game 1 against the New Jersey Devils (ESPN, 8 p.m. ET).

"I felt really good," he said. "We'll know a little more (Thursday) and I'll do some contact drills to see how it feels. I'm a little tentative doing some pivots, and I just want to get my confidence back."

Klemm has just one goal and two assists in the playoffs but he has a plus-7 plus-minus rating. His steady play often gets overshadowed by the work of Rob Blake, Ray Bourque and Adam Foote.

Klemm injured his knee Friday when he slammed into the boards in the third period of Game 4 of the Western Conference finals against the St. Louis Blues. The knee twisted under his body and he could not put any pressure on his right leg while being helped from the ice.

"I was very scared when it first happened," Klemm said. "The way I went in, the way I twisted it, I'm not a real flexible guy. I was fortunate that it wasn't more serious."

While Klemm took part in the team's optional practice, Colorado captain Joe Sakic took the day off. Sakic, who has nine goals and eight assists, injured his right shoulder on April 30 but said everything is fine heading into the finals.

"I feel great," Sakic said as he left the team's practice complex.

Forwards Dave Reid and Shjon Podein also skipped the team's one-hour practice.
