Roy's mishandle leads to goal, momentum shift Associated Press EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. Patrick Roy and Rob Blake couldn't escape their big mistakes this time. One blunder by the Colorado Avalanche goalie and another by one of the team's top defensemen led to New Jersey's two third-period goals. It turned a one-goal lead into a 3-2 loss Saturday night in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals. Instead of leading the best-of-seven series 3-1, the Avalanche return home tied 2-2. With the Avalanche leading 2-1 eight minutes into the third period, Roy went behind the net to get the puck but couldn't control it. Jay Pandolfo pressured him into giving up the puck, and the Devils forward slid a pass out to Scott Gomez in front for a tap-in goal into an empty net at 8:09 of the third. The goalie was caught beside the net skating backward as he watched Gomez score. In Game 3, Roy nearly cost his team a short-handed goal when he strayed far out of his net in the closing seconds of the second period. Patrick Elias got a shot off toward the vacated net, while Roy was out near the right circle, but it struck the right post. Roy recovered quickly Saturday night, and turned the Devils away several times in the ensuing minutes. With just under six minutes left, Roy deflected a shot straight up the air. When it landed dangerously in front, Roy calmly scooped it up to force a faceoff. But his efforts wouldn't be enough, and Blake made the error that cost the Avalanche the game in the final three minutes. The All-Star defenseman, acquired from Los Angeles in February to solidify Colorado's Stanley Cup chances, tried to clear along the right boards. The attempt was blocked at the blue line by Elias, who pushed the puck back in the Avalanche zone. Blake was met by Bobby Holik, and couldn't handle the puck again. Elias got it and sent it to Petr Sykora for the game-winner with only 2:37 left. Colorado could have weathered the late mistakes if the Avalanche converted on any of their five penalties. Instead, they yielded a short-handed goal that got the Devils even 1-1 in the second period. The Avalanche were smothered throughout managing only four shots in each of the three periods. |
