Tuesday, June 4 Updated: June 5, 7:32 AM ET Red Wings need more power in their play By Barry Melrose Special to ESPN.com ESPN's Barry Melrose breaks down Detroit's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes' in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals: I don't think Detroit's Game 1 loss was a case of the Red Wings taking Carolina lightly, like we saw with Vancouver. Carolina played great hockey and Arturs Irbe made some key saves. The Hurricanes' penalty kill was super, holding a talented Detroit power play to 1-for-7. So, going into Game 2, one aspect of Detroit's game that has to change is its power play. Detroit needs to find a way to get the puck to the net more -- especially with a guy like Tomas Holmstrom out front. The Red Wings have to shoot more and be more aggressive. They need to put some men in front of Irbe and hunt the puck harder. Detroit was a perimeter team in Game 1. When Detroit is playing well, they're going to the net and winning physical battles. Detroit also needs to move the puck east to west more. Some teams go north and south, and as they go to the net, don't pass the puck sideways very much. They'll shoot the puck a lot and try and win with rebounds and loose pucks. A talented team like Detroit likes to have the puck going up one side of the ice and then throw it right across to the other side. That makes a goaltender move and is a much tougher save for a goaltender to make. Right now, Irbe is so sharp and confident that the Red Wings are not scoring on initial shots. When they did move the puck side-to-side, Detroit had some decent chances. If they do more of it, it should loosen up Irbe, and instead of being so aggressive on the first shot, he'll have to stay back in the net, allowing Detroit to score some first-shot goals -- which the Wings weren't able to do in the opener.
