Sorting out the seeds

By Sherry Skalko

Entering Saturday's games, only the Carolina Hurricanes, Montreal Canadiens and Detroit Red Wings knew their place in the playoffs. The playoff picture becomes clearer as Saturday's games conclude. Here's a rundown of the different scenarios that could pan out between now and Sunday evening:

Eastern Conference
Boston Bruins: The Bruins clinched the Northeast Division and the Eastern Conference title with a 7-1 win over the Penguins and will play the Canadiens in the first round.

Philadelphia Flyers: They clinched the Atlantic Division title with their win over the Rangers and were relegated to second place by the Bruins' win over Pittsburgh. The Flyers will face the Senators in the first round.

Carolina Hurricanes: The Hurricanes will finish third and will face the Devils if the Islanders beat the Flyers on Sunday. If the Islanders lose or tie, they play the Hurricanes.

Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs will finish in fourth place in the conference and will face the Islanders if they beat the Flyers on Sunday. If the Islanders lose or tie, the Leafs will play the Devils.

New Jersey Devils: If the Islanders beat the Flyers on Sunday, the Devils will finish in sixth place and play the Hurricanes. If the Islanders lose or tie, the Devils will finish fifth and play the Maple Leafs.

New York Islanders: Though the Flyers clinched the Atlantic with their win over the Rangers on Saturday, the Islanders can still finish fifth with a win over the Flyers on Sunday. If so, they'd face the Leafs in the first round. If the Islanders lose or tie, they'll face the Hurricanes.

Ottawa Senators: With their loss to Toronto, the Senators finish seventh and will face the Flyers in the first round

Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens will finish eighth and play the Bruins in the first round.

Western Conference
Detroit Red Wings: The Wings laid claim to first in March, and have been waiting for their first-round victim...um, opponent.

Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks: Having already clinched their division titles, the Avalanche and Sharks are jockeying for second place. The Sharks temporarily claimed the spot after a 3-1 win over the Kings on Saturday. They'll hold onto it only if the Avalanche lose to the Stars on Sunday.

St. Louis Blues: The Blues laid claim to the last home ice spot in the West with their 3-2 overtime win against Detroit and the Los Angeles Kings' 3-1 loss to the Sharks.

Seeds No. 5-8: The Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, Phoenix Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks can finish in any order from No. 5 to No. 8.
