Sorry, Gordie In his many marks on history, Gretzky remained one of the final links to the defunct World Hockey Association. Gretzky played just one season, between the Indianapolis Racers and the Edmonton Oilers, but he scored 53 goals in the rival league. It was there he first had a chance to skate on the same ice as his boyhood idol, Gordie Howe. It took Gretzky nearly 20 years to finally catch the ageless Howe in combined NHL and WHA goals.

Gretzky scores his 1,072nd goal to pass Gordie Howe as the most prolific goal-scorer in major professional hockey.
