Actually, I think the Flyers' style has changed from what they were stereotyped as in the past. They were succcessful as the Broad Street Bullies, but the organization recognizes the game is changing quite a bit right now. There is more of an emphasis on speed and skill than there was in the past. It is a distinct change in philosophy, and the Flyers are trying to find a way to adapt and stay competitive; they're doing it with good defensive hockey. I didn't really have to change my game when I went to Philadelphia. I didn't hit as much in Philly because I had so much pain in my knee, but I tried to do the other stuff that I ended up becoming known for, getting under a guy's skin, etc. ... Philadelphia was a great fit for me. In my opinion, you need power forwards. You don't build a team with 12 forwards who are all the same. You need three or four guys who are built on power but also have the skill to play at a higher level. If I was building a team, I would look at what is going on in the game today but still know a good mix of players was important. Put simply, today's game is built around goaltending, defensive hockey and a good power play. If you have those three attitibutes, you are going to have a good chance of winning every night. New Jersey is a prime example of that right now. Keith Jones was an eight-year NHL veteran and finished his career with the Philadelphia Flyers. |
