The Stars had one of the oldest teams in the NHL last season. Dallas shaved some age off its roster during the summer with the departure of forwards Guy Carbonneau and Brian Skrudland, along with defenseman Sylvain Cote. However, the club also lost younger forwards Aaron Gavey and Scott Thornton, along with defenseman Jamie Pushor, as well as goalie Manny Fernandez. Veteran Rick Tabaracci will back up starter Ed Belfour. In addition, Ted Donato and Shaun Van Allen were brought in to add depth at forward, while the Stars hope Sami Helenius has a strong camp and can solidify the team at defense.
Here's a look at the rest of Dallas' training camp.
Big question: Youth ready to rise?
While the Stars have a solid group of veterans up front, the club is trying to work youngsters such as Brendan Morrow, Blake Sloan, Roman Lyashenko and Jonathan Sim into the lineup. Morrow and Sim were both 40-plus goal scorers during their junior hockey days. Can they produce offensively at this level?
The age issue is not limited to the forward position. Defensemen Sergei Zubov and Darryl Sydor struggled last season, and the hope is they'll bounce back. But if they don't, Brad Lukowich and Richard Jackman must step up and play at a high level. Both rookies recorded double-digit goal seasons while playing defense in junior hockey. In fact Jackman, a first-round pick (fifth overall) in 1996, scored an incredible 33 goals as a defenseman his final junior season with Sault Ste. Marie in '97-98.
Biggest position battle: Defense
The Stars' top two lines on defense are as good as it gets with Derian Hatcher and Richard Matvichuk, along with Zubov and Sydor. However, it's a mad scramble for the final pairing. Training camp will see players such as Jackman, Helenius, Lukowich, John Erskine and Alan Letang battling for the last slots on the blueline.
Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.
Richard Jackman (Defense):
Jackman received his first taste of the NHL last season when he appeared in 22 games, collecting a goal and two assists. The defenseman played in 71 games for the Stars' IHL affiliate in Kalamazoo during the '98-99 season, notching 13 goals. So, he does have the potential to produce offensively. He might get a better chance to do that at the NHL level this season.
John Erskine (Defense):
Erskine was taken with the Stars' first pick (39th overall) in '98 and in many ways, resembles Hatcher. Like the current Dallas captain, Erskine has size (6-foot-4, 197 pounds), can produce a little in the opposition's zone -- he has hovered around the 10-goal mark each of the last two seasons in the OHL -- and is not shy about getting involved in the physical part of the game -- he has averaged 200 penalty minutes each of the last three seasons. He could see some ice time in Dallas this season, but might need one more campaign in juniors.
