MONTREAL -- Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios was selected as
captain of the U.S. team for the World Cup tournament Monday.
Chelios, 42, was also captain of the U.S. team at the 2002
Olympics in Salt Lake City, as well as at the 1998 Games in Nagano,
The United States plays its first game of the World Cup
tournament Tuesday against Canada in Montreal.
Chelios is a three-time winner of the Norris Trophy, awarded annually
to the NHL's best defenseman. He is an unrestricted free agent
after finishing last season with the Detroit Red Wings.
