Moses breaks 100-meter breaststroke mark

AUSTIN, Texas – Ed Moses he has been on the brink of breaking the world record in the 100-meter breaststroke for more than a year.

He finally did it Wednesday at the USA Swimming National Championships with a time of 1 minute, 00.29 seconds, breaking Roman Sloudnov's mark (1:00.36) set in June 2000 at the Russian Olympic trials.

"I've been so close to that record, and after this morning's swim, I expected to break it," the Olympic silver medalist said. "I think I have a better swim in me and look forward to breaking a minute."

Moses, from Burke, Va., qualified for the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan, in July and gets $12,500 from USA Swimming for breaking the world record.

Anthony Robinson of Stanford and Jarrod Marrs of Curl-Burke tied for second (1:03.39). Since the top two swimmers qualify for the world championships, Robinson beat Marrs in a swim off.

Robert Margalis of St. Petersburg won the 400 freestyle in 3:48.72. Chad Carvin of Mission Viejo finished second (3:49.47).

Kaitlin Sandeno of the Nellie Gators won the 400 individual medley (4:42.98), and Maggie Bowen of Auburn finished second (4:43.75) to make the world championship team.

Natalie Coughlin of the Terrapins won the 100 butterfly (59.38), and Mary Descenza from Academy Bullets finished second (59.39).
