AX-LES-THERMES, France -- Dutch rider Bram de
Groot was in a "satisfactory condition" after he suffered
serious facial injuries and lost consciousness on Friday during
a crash in the 12th stage of the Tour de France.
The 27-year-old Rabobank rider was taken to hospital after
falling and hitting a safety barricade on the descent of the
Col de Jau, around 70 kms into the stage, according to the race
report on the Tour's Web site, www.letour.com.
De Groot lost consciousness after the crash and suffered
"serious" facial injuries In a statement, race doctors said he
was in "satisfactory condition" at Noon ET.
"Initial x-ray and scanner tests performed on de Groot were
negative. Additional tests are under way," the statement said.
Friday's stage through the Pyrenees was the scene of
several accidents, including a crash on the last descent
involving Italian rider Guido Trentin and Kurt Van de Wouwer of
Belgium.
Doctors said Van de Wouwer had fractured his left
collarbone and suffered multiple bruises. He abandoned the
race, but Trentin went on to finish eight minutes and 12
seconds behind stage winner Felix Cardenas.
Sergei Ivanov, the winner of the ninth stage from
Pontarlier to Aix-les-Bains, also abandoned the race after
crashing and injuring his left shoulder.
Earlier, two women were taken by helicopter to hospital
after their publicity convoy vehicle went off into a ravine,
witnesses said.
