EDMONTON, Alberta -- A male track athlete competing in the World Championships has sought refugee status in Canada.
"An athlete got in touch with people at the (housing facility)," Edmonton police Sgt. Jeff Anderson said Sunday. "We provided him with a bit of sanctuary until we got in touch with immigration."
Immigration spokesman Ann Lawler confirmed an individual made a
refugee claim.
"We can't confirm any personal information such as name, gender, nationality, age or occupation," Lawler said. "All claimants are entitled to protection of their personal information."
World Championships spokesman Randy Kildurn said only the Canadian government could release information on the case.
"It is a federal government issue and only they can add to that," Kildurn said.
A message left for the meet's government liaison was not immediately returned Sunday night.
Last month at the Francophone Games in Hull, Quebec, nearly a
hundred participants applied for political asylum.
