EDMONTON, Alberta -- U.S. champion Regina Jacobs withdrew
from the women's 800 meters at the World Championships because of
an injury to her right foot.
Jacobs was on crutches Monday when she returned home to Oakland,
Calif.
"I have my first major injury that I can't race through," said
Jacobs, who dropped out of her heat in the 1,500 Saturday with 150
meters remaining after feeling a sharp pain in her foot halfway
through the race. "It's more than disappointing. I had some great
workouts coming into the championships and thought I would medal. I
could not push off my foot."
Jacobs won the 800 and 1,500 at the USA Championships. She also
is a two-time World Championships silver medalist in the 1,500 and
holds American records for 1,000 and 5,000 meters.
Jacobs also withdrew from the 1,500 at last year's Olympics
because of illness.
