OGDEN, Utah -- Kari Erickson's reigning national champions remained unbeaten and clinched two wins Friday -- locking up the U.S. women's Olympic curling berth.
The team improved to 9-0 with one game remaining in the competition.
Erickson, Debbie McCormick, Stacey Liapis and Ann Swisshelm had a 6-1 lead over Joraanstad, the 2001 junior national champions, in four ends. Joraanstad's team conceded after eight ends, following a draw for two by Erickson.
The men's winner could be decided Saturday, as Tim Somerville's team has a two-game lead over second-place rinks.
Round robin competition continues Saturday, but the women's game will be meaningless because Patti Lank's team is the division runner-up. Lank's team beat Amy Wright rink 11-5 on Friday.
There is still a tie for third place between the Wright, Cassie Johnson and Lori Mountford teams. |
