Russia saves spot for Nabokov, status under protest

ESPN.com news services

NEW YORK -- Slava Fetisov all but completed his roster for Russia's Olympic hockey team Friday, leaving one spot open in case San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov is able to play.

Fetisov, the Russian coach, named 14 additional players to the eight he had named earlier this year.

The International Ice Hockey Federation declared Nabokov ineligible to play for Russia because he had competed for Kazakstan as a junior in 1994. He and the Russian team are fighting the decision.

The case will be settled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"So much time was lost," Fetisov said, explaining why he didn't read Nabokov's name at the Russian Consulate General in New York. "The case is open and we are going to help him settle his case. We do hope for a positive result, in particular because Evgeni is so eager to play."

Three players were not so eager and refused Fetisov's invitation -- Toronto's Alexander Mogilny, Buffalo's Alexei Zhitnik and Dallas' Sergei Zubov.

Fetisov, also the New Jersey Devils assistant coach, seemed most peeved at Zhitnik.

"It was last minute," Fetisov said. "He gave me explanations or excuses. I was disappointed. I counted on him."

Zubov and Mogilny decided over the summer they would not play and did not waver despite Fetisov's repeated pleas.

Florida's Valeri Bure was named, joining brother Pavel. Valeri Bure assured Fetisov he would be able to contribute after tearing knee cartilage in mid-October. Valeri is expected to be out of NHL action until mid-January.

"There is still a month and a half to regain his playing condition," Fetisov said.

Fetisov also selected his former Central Russian Army teammate, Igor Larionov of Detroit. The 41-year-old Larionov will serve as captain. Pavel Bure captained the Russian team to the silver medal in Nagano.

"It did not even need to be discussed," Fetisov said. "Igor is the most respected player in Russia and (Pavel) said, 'He is the only man who can be captain."'

Detroit forward Sergei Fedorov was named, ending months of speculation that he might back out to rest nagging injuries, as was Atlanta phenom Ilya Kovalchuk, called a "great rising star" by Fetisov.

Tampa Bay's Nikolai Khabibulin is the No. 1 goalie, backed up -- for now -- by Yegor Podomatsky, who plays for Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian League.

Joining previously named defensemen Sergei Gonchar of Washington, Darius Kasparaitis of Pittsburgh, Oleg Tverdovsky of Anaheim and Dmitry Yushkevich of Toronto are Vladimir Malakhov of the New York Rangers, Danny Markov of Phoenix and Boris Mironov of Chicago.

Buffalo's Maxim Afinogenov, Florida's Viktor Kozlov, Washington's Andrei Nikolishin, Boston's Sergei Samsonov, Chicago's Alexei Zhamnov and Oleg Kvasha of the New York Islanders join forwards Alexei Kovalev of Pittsburgh and Alexei Yashin of the Islanders.
